Swan Lake is a thrilling ballet performance that originated in 1877. Yes! It has been almost 150 years since the legendary Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the epic score, but it’s still one of the most famous ballet performances of all time, second only to Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. During spring, countless ballet companies deliver their renditions of the beloved tale about the beautiful Princess Odette, who has been cursed by the evil sorcerer Baron Von Rothbart. Odette has been turned into a Swan but returns to human form at night. She meets the handsome Prince Siegfried, who will help her break this curse.
The groundbreaking two-act ballet first premiered in 1877 at Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Eighteen years later, a revival of Swan Lake was spearheaded by Marius Petipa, whose amazing work includes the Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. Fast forward to a century and a half later, many ballet productions have created their own revivals of this outstanding classic. The World Ballet Series, in particular, has pulled out all the stops for each performance. This 2024, the highly-awaited presentation of Swan Lake will be choreographed by Nadezha Kalinina. The show was said to be a “lovingly retouched” version of Petipa’s fantastic Swan Lake Revival. Attendees at the Youkey Theatre on Wednesday, 3rd April 2024, can look forward to outstanding performances by the World Ballet Series’ talented dancers, as well as exquisite hand-sewn costumes (over 150 of them!). Moreover, the impressive stage design will feature expertly handcrafted works of the talented stage team.
